My theory is Merry ends up stuck in the past due to one of her time travel jaunts and thus has to Bender's Big Score her way back to the present, becoming Yukari along the way.

Someone asked ZUN this and he simply mentioned Lafcadio Hearn, who changed his name to Koizumi Yakumo. So probably Merry just got stuck in the past in one of her many time travel moments and eventually became Yukari.
Sumireko founded the Hifuu club that Merry and Renko are in and has Renko's last name so probably her grandma or some shit.
Yumemi doesn't return after PC98 but that grand unified theory shit from Yumemi's backstory is mentioned in Hifuu.
