I didn't know there was a shitstorm about Polivanov, I actually went there to try to find something obscure enough _avoid_ anyone's pre-existing ideas about romanization. Really, it's the ou's that bother me more than the consonants. Though, my thinking is... you don't have a problem when Spanish uses "j" instead of "h", so why have a problem when Japanese uses "s" instead of "sh"... or for that matter, you're okay with "u" instead of "oo" and "e" instead of "ay", so why demand that consonants be written to match English?
