i think the current mismatch on the numbers can be explained by the words of the local kobacuck extended to the whole fandom: "i only care about the music", and so do the great majority who still call themselves fans, they go to concerts (the only thing that matters that still exists), buy some merch, and then fuck off away from this band

the days of talking/caring about bm 24/7 are gone for most fans, and they are obviously not wining new fans, that's quite the definition of boomer band, some loyal fans + dead hype
