>Generally, I imagine, authors try to have a good grasp on what their characters can do and what they are feeling in order to make conflict realistic.
Exactly this. Other anons name drop authors who ''powerscale'' but they dont. They just mindlessly turn up the dial then turn it down a bit when they write themselves into a corner then turn it back up. No thought or consideration.
>But even then those characters aren't introduced in this story due to ZUN establishing their abillties as being good counters to Mizuchi's in previous works.
Extremely lazy writing. Why couldn't he think up something that justifies them not being there, not wanting to take part or MIzuchi finding a counter to their counter or working around it?
>Also a character jobbing is a normal thing that happens in stories, and when a strong character jobs that doesn't mean their weak, but their opponent is stronger or has an advantage
Your Kasen example does make sense but It isn't so cut and dry unfortunately. It could be that they aren't stronger but still win somehow with no explanation. And if there is one its contrived or stupid. Like ''muh power of friendship'' or ''i tried really hard so that means i win'' or deus ex machinas. Them suddenly becoming stronger or the advantage they may be nonsensical or stupid. Take a look at any 2hu lore thread on this board and you'll see people rightfully complaining that a toehoe loses all the time. This happens even more often in communities centered around stories with lots of fights. Go to /a/ and click on any thread about shounen anime. Especially if its a Kengan or Baki one.
