why can't i finish a game

i've been practicing a handful of the games since last september on a gamepad now

i can memorize the patterns and sometimes i am really on the ball, walking into stage 4/5 in a given game with no misses

but most of the time i normally back into a bullet or lose focus during the stage. once i've lost a life at all it usually goes downhill, it makes me feel stupid that i've been doing this for months but haven't finished a game yet. this is such an internalized struggle for me now. i'm not getting any younger
