>is this stuff still in production
Yes.
>have the laws changed?
No, but Japan took active measures to get all physical media out of stores for the Olympics so gaijins won't stumble upon it and cause more havoc than they already do. Most producers have switched to digital only distribution.

>Were the children from poor families or they were a legit way to go into business?
Both. Obviously money is a main incentive but a lot of girls see it as a privilege too, especially having a feature in the long running famous magazines is seen as a priced possession and a lot of them only do 1 or 2 shootings and that's it so they can later show it off to their friends.

The popular ones with long careers get paid well and how they use that money is up to them. I've seen some who use it for college tuition, savings, but I've also seen some blow it on luxury cars. A lot of them have an enormous fan base by the time they're 18 and it's often a catapult into instant fame. The most successful one right now will turn 18 in a few months and it is already pretty clear she'll go on to become a superstar if she doesn't act stupid. The most coveted musical stage actress in Japan right now started her career with gravure at 12. One of the most well known TV news casters did the same. There are countless singers, actresses, media personalities etc. who started off like that. There's even one who became a pro wrestler LMAO. Most of them NEVER would have even had a chance at these competitive positions if it weren't for their early gravure works. In the last 20 years I can only recount one single instance where it was arguable whether the girl was talked into it by her parents and didn't really enjoy it. So all things considered, yes, it is a fool proof way into stardom and the worst scenario is you have some savings in your bank account once they graduate.

>Are there good articles about this whole deal?
No. The West has terribly warped concepts of sexuality in general and obviously doesn't compute with any culture that doesn't adhere to their insane ideologies. They've wrecked havoc all over Asia already and anything you'll find is sensationalism and demonizing. Asians always have and always will appreciate the aesthetic, spirit and beauty of young girls. It is literally ingrained in their earliest history. There was a heartfelt long article last month written from a girl who started gravure at 11. She is now 18 and she thanked her fans for literally saving her father's life. She revealed he had a severe illness and stroke at the time and all the money she earned from gravure she used to treat him. Today he can walk again and lead a normal life and she said she'll be forever thankful to her fans and wants to continue gravure to show her gratitude towards them. All you'll ever hear from Western autists is the usual CEEPEEEE! SHUT IT DOWN! BURN EVERYTHING! JESUS CRIES!
