i think such a twist would only work if you went further into the maria/battler relationship than the original does
even if it stayed platonic the dynamic between the two drops off pretty rapidly past episode 2, so you'd need to have them consistently interacting and having a close relationship past that point for the surprise to work properly
i honestly think you'd have to make the beato/battler relationship not so hitched upon 'understanding each other = love' for such a thing to work well, which would change the direction of the story quite a bit, because otherwise you'd undervalue battler's situation with maria
whether that's positive or negative is up to your preference i think
