Some ships survived of course, but their fate wasn't much more enviable. The most modern battleships in the French navy, the Richelieu-class, were sent to Dakar and Casablanca when they weren't even finished yet. When the British and the US came back to finish the job, Jean Bart only had one working gun turret and Richelieu suffered premature detonation because the French didn't even have the time to test her own guns before engaging royal Navy BBs.

Jean Bart did her best but being stuck in a harbor made her an easy target and she was sunk by USS Massachusetts (later refloated). Richelieu at least survived and ended up joining the Allies in 1943
