She's based on a "gap dwelling youkai", which may be traditional but may just as likely be an early invention of Mizuki Shigeru.

Her abilities are made up - the youkai she is based on is pretty much just an unseen entity that lives in gaps. It has no special abilities.

I doubt ZUN had/has/will have any longer term plans for the future of Gensokyo, but as things are right now, Ran with Chen as her shikigami is pretty much set up as Yukari's heiress apparent. The only real difference would be Ran has to use artificial means to maintain the boundary.

Then again, if there was to be any change of power it would be completely random, since Yukari is neither the appointed nor the de facto ruler of Gensokyo.
