I'm level 34 and I have no idea how pets work

Do I give them gold so they automatically train their skills?

Do I splice desirable traits from one pet to another using the gene machine? Is there a list of better pets to splice from?

I've played most of the game with a perma dead golden knight and I just don't know how to get the godly OP pets you smart people have.
