Wanna hear a serious answer? This's gonna be long.

Several things actually, first let make it clear that their visual presentation is shit. Though I noticed a fair amount of people like that, mostly because it looks kind of hilarious in its own right.

First, their main content is streaming, which means lots of raw material for fan works. However, there's one thing that's pretty much unique to them is that they use those for official content too, like singing fan songs or using fanmade 3D model. This might sound like jew but it will encourage their fan to make even more contents, thus creating an extremely dedicated fan base.

Their VA, especially the top one are all very talent entertainers (not necessarily good at singing or voice acting). They can hold a show on themselves and pretty good at making jokes. Their large number of casts allow easy collab and interaction. Constant mentioning of each other help created some very interesting group gimmick and draw audiences from bigger one to smaller one. More characters also mean more choice to watch.

Lastly, I haven't heard anyone saying this, but streaming is probably the strongest tool a Vtuber could use, along with social media. If there's one thing that makes this niche unique, it's the fact you could exist in the same world as fictional characters, and chatting with them is the best way to create this experience. Not the only way of course, but the ideal mostly stays the same. The Nijisanji is really good at this, most popular one managed to create a pretty strong relationship with their fan.

To sum up, I'd say their reason for success, either by luck or by their bosses vision, is due to the powerful connections among characters and fan they created. You don't look at them just as individuals but as a group. Though I doubt this group could ever grow this fast without Mito exploded in popularity. See the chart for reference.
