I would personally say many of his works were rather niche beyond lain for most 2D consumers

As someone who was an ``otaku'' in the early 2000s, I personally feel the aesthetic of Di Gi Charat, Hand Maid May, DearS, Elfen Lied, Galaxy Angel, etc. as the defining aesthetic of the period

Brightly colored outfits, vibrant blue skies, lots of colorful hairstyles, frilly/overdesigned outfits with accessories, etc. Almost all series had a character that had some sort of "head accessory" sticking out. Lots of girls with pink and purple hair and "hair vents"
Lots of pink and pastel colors like light aqua or light orange.
Moe was in it's heyday
