Nationalism is taboo in Japan since they essentially became a vassal state after WW2 and they've been conditioned from birth to immediately associate feelings of nationalism with soldiers screaming "Banzai!" and slicing apart Chinese and Americans while loaded up on meth. It's the same with words like 大和魂. Japanese people can't say that without causing everyone nearby to cringe and look at the ground.

There's not much reason to feel pride in their country anyway since it's difficult to not feel like your nation is castrated when you have military bases of the nation that conquered you all over your country, your own army amounts to nothing more than a self-defense force, and you rely almost entirely on the protection of the same nation that nuked two of your cities less than a century ago.

It would be like if a man came into your house when you were a child, immediately killed your father, forced you to watch as he raped and murdered your mother, then castrated you, and then finally he holds you in his arms, protects you from harm but never allows you to walk, and makes you suck on his teat.

How long did it take you to learn Japanese?
