You can be serious about someone, have great communication and understanding for each other but that doesn't mean the relationship will always work out. You can understand for your partner's culture, wants, needs and expectations but that doesn't mean it won't clash with yours. With foreigner and japanese relationships there's going to be tons of clashes and regardless of how serious and committed they are to each other, it's usually too much to overcome. Ask anyone who's been in a relationship with a japanese person and they'd tell you same.
