Komachi usually gets all the work she needs to do, done.
Problems only arise when her workload spikes for whatever reason (such as the soul phenomenon every 60 years) and she doesn't pick up the pace to compensate. Her job is full and well completed otherwise.

Either that, or he's protecting himself from infection or injury as he - per tradition - may have had to cut off his ears to land the job (although to be fair, the tradition doesn't seem to have been enforced all too hard).

Although it's true, medieval or renaissance executioners were the last to retain some amount of anonymity. In the modern age, executioners in most European countries became public officials like any other.

Not sure if anything comparable exists today. It's a pretty big leap from the executioner with the axe in the square to two people in a clean white room pushing two clean white buttons.

Everyone's booked from birth anyway. Which, when you think about it, may not be such a bad thing. Afterlives featuring rivers tend to hammer the point home as hard as possible that being left on near side of the river is a dreadful existance.

But then again, classical myth tends to be free of ferrymen who throw people in the river when they want a day off.
