My monkey brain buys into the headcanon that Ran lies by omission and hides her powerlevel. I think she's a better character when she's not just an extension of Yukari and it puts some contrast with the other servant characters. She's loyal, but there's a slight wall in between her and Yukari. Compared to Youmu's innocence and familial tie, and Sakuya's undying to a fault doglike loyalty, you can see Ran trying to have some independent thought. It matches more with how Shikigami were in mythology as they weren't always aligned with the master and their goals. Until ZUN reveals the background for how Chen came about, all you can do is speculate how Ran obtained a shikigami for herself. Was she ordered to or did she decide on her own?
