I actually do have a curiosity. Having done very little research into both, are Buddhism and Taoism really so incompatible with one another that practicing one in public and the other in private is such a terrible and scandalous thing?

Depends on the kind of fight. Byakuren is a musclebound oaf jock and Miko is a nerd with funny headgear, so the former would almost certainly win a straight-up bar fight while the latter would almost certain win a battle of wits.

Of course, the real answer is that neither of them would win a fight because they wouldn't have a fight in the first place.
