I think I only died once while holding a bomb, and I only had one extra life when I beat Yuyuko. I also realized that I play better when I don't have any bombs left, since I can focus only on dodging and not worry about pressing X.
Although I'm still not as good as I wish I was, I'm still very happy with the result.
