GoD1 and 2 aren't connected storywise so you don't have to worry anything related for that.
Applying patch is important like the other anon said for fixin bugs and balance.
You get affection items that lets you do heroine quests from main story but you don't get enough to do everyone in one run, so focus on few heroines, you can get as many heroine endings as long as you set their ending flag in their invidual quests and then you can choose their ending in the epilogue section but not every heroine have ending depending on route. For quick route/capturable heroine branching: Ashley, Kei, Ekidona (comes grouped with Chris and chuunibot) are capturable on Machine-route. Parshe, Byakuen, Rufee, Chronos (comes grouped with Yosaku and Safiina) are capturable on Magic-route.
Machine route is more interesting than Magic route and has better heroine focus as Ashley and Ekidona are the best girls.
If you want challenge you should start on normal and then switch to hard around route split or bit before, if you start with hard it isn't really balanced for it in early game mainly due not having constant full party.
Thats some general good to know things I guess.
Also beware of the rapeballs, don't tell me I didn't warn you.
