Agreed. A lot of hateboners are directed at specific fan interpretations, rather than canon itself. It doesn't surprise me that there's so much "your fanon is shit but mine is fine" hypocrisy with a cast this big.
And even without favoritism, there will always be someone who can't help but associate stupid fan shit with the actual character. To them it's impossible to ignore aggravating fanon and the people that perpetuate it, so they lash out in retaliation.

I'm (un)fortunately not a NEET, but my brother is.
He's not retarded, but somewhat slow and very socially paranoid. The thing is we're financially stable enough for him to live off parental+my income, which I'm totally okay with. My folks though keep telling him to find a job to gain "life experience" and get out of the house, even from something as soul crushing as grocery work. On one hand I understand their concern, but on the other I don't want to put him in a situation that will make him miserable.

I'm okay with any fanon that takes the source material and makes an interesting, well written story. Being close to canon makes it much better though.
