In my opinion both IA and Gumi (especially Gumi) are much, much better than Meiko, Crypton or not.

I'd say the 5 essential vocaloids are, in no particular order, Miku, Luka, Rin/Len, Gumi and IA. Not that there's anything wrong with having more than that, in fact some variety is always good.
