Honestly $35k is more than a bit of an exaggeration and I want to correct it, the real number is somewhere below $15k. Your $35k figure doesn't include requests and gifts and what I'll call "opportunity discounts". For example, pic related only cost me the price of a ~$5 videogame that the artist wanted (+tax) because it was a one time offer the artist posted on /v/ and I just kinda got lucky.
I can give you a more in depth breakdown if you'd like, but I don't usually like posting too much with my "identity" attached because it feels like glorified namefaggotry.

That said, I've noticed a lot of the non-commission art I get, even when I post it here directly in addition to on twitter, doesn't always get picked up by archivist anons. I see it happen to lots other MG art too, even tagged stuff sometimes gets overlooked. Kinda off topic but a few years ago I recall sharing, alongside a bunch of the Gazer art I had requested, a whole bunch of MGE art I'd found in various places that apparently at the time most people here weren't familiar with. Now, aside from requesting and buying a lot of art, I'm just an anonymous nobody like anyone else here, so what I'm trying to say is that the internet is a big place and there's a lot of content that can go super unnoticed if you're not always poised to find it. You'll usually find a lot of opportunities for free or cheap art in the same places you find art thanks goes under the radar. Tumblr used to be good for that but not so much anymore.
It might just be that my waifufag autism helps me find good opportunities for getting new art for cheap and also discovering art that might have been overlooked, but it feels like a lot of random chance is involved. Also good connections; recently one of the Japanese MGE community writefags pointed me in the direction of this picture that I probably would have totally missed otherwise.
