It depends.

if you want to read with high proficiency and not having to look up 1 word every couple of sentences then you better start vocab grinding now. it's a long way to 40k.

keep the diminishing returns in mind. by the time you've gotten through your first ln or vn and mined several hundreds of words out of it, you'll understand 85% of everything you see or hear, but going from 85% to 95% is harder than going from 0 to 50%, or 50 to 85%, not because you'll be seeing rare kanji, but rather because you'll see lots of combinations made up of the same kanji shuffled differently.
besides, knowing words is not equal to being able to guess their figurative uses, or easily grasping long and complex sentences made up of them.
even if you've seen a word 2 or 10 times through media or srs, you might not ever use it in a conversation, maybe because you don't relate that word to your own thoughts, or maybe because you haven't struck upon the right moment to use it.
