I don't know how many times I have to explain this. Higurashi, at its heart, is a typical and cliche harem. It just is. Think about it.
Boy changes school and is surounded by beautiful girls whom he has fun with every day, but because he's dense he never forms romantic relationships with any of them.
It's as cliche as they come.

And look at the cast.
Rena, a typical moeblob airhead.
Mion, a typical tsundere tomboy. Even her long skirt reflects her personality, as those with long skirts tend to be boyish and aggressive.
And then you get two archetype loli. A little brat ojou-sama and then a typical silent but smarter than her peers loli.

Everything about the Higurashi cast was designed to make you believe from the start that everything about it is cliche. That's the entire point. So that when the horror comes, it comes literally out of nowhere. The reason why USODA is so shocking is because a moeblob airhead typically never goes to the literal opposite extreme. And as the story progresses, each of these cliche characters are given depth until they break from their archetypical characters and become actual human characters with dreams, hopes and flaws.

It's the reason why animeonlyfags hate Higurashi Kira while those who actually read the VN love that OVA. The OVA is about the gang shenanigans and has no real mystery or horror. It goes back to its roots because that's the entire basis of the story; a harem. But for animeonlyfags who never experienced the harem SoL moments from the VN, all they enjoy is the horror aspect and hate how everything is silly in Kira.

I think it's more because he unlocked how to write female characters and brags about it. Higanbana is basically a story with nearly only female characters to the point where it's too obvious.
