Ah, now I see your point of view. I, personally, don't see it as a personal improvement. That's just better living conditions, where you have access to more services and goods. The people who invented those technologies and services are the ones who matter. If Bell didn't have any dreams we wouldn't have the phone; if Von Neumann didn't have any ambitions the computers wouldn't be the same; etc. Those people had their objectives set high, they wanted to improve the technology (or just acquire the knowledge) and thus you have those wonderful services and gadgets.
You might have access to a lot of information thanks to your PC and internet, but if I take it from you and give them to another person, you're worthless.

Personal improvement for me is to improve yourself, better your skills, acquire more knowledge, get a better understanding of the world, etc. immaterial things that are innate to you. Because if your worth is decided by external factors, it's not 'personal' anymore.
