*mg mg* Alright, as I was saying, Warhammer 40k takes place at the turn 42nd millenium. It mainly focuses on the galaxy spanning Imperium of Man, which has been fighting a long war against various alien and supernatural factions. It is spearheaded by a god-like being known as the Emperor of Mankind, who is perhaps the most powerful human that history will ever know in the setting. He is worshipped by trillions of humans, for He is to this day the only reason why the entire Imperium hasn't fallen apart as His soul empowers the Astronomicon (think of it as a massive lighthouse for spaceships). The problem is, He's basically half dead, and is incapable of leading his Imperium. In his place, a vast bureaucracy had developed to lead in His name. Naturally, that has led to some problems. Problems which have grown over ten millennia. *mg* *mg*

*mg* *mg* The Imperium was created by the Emperor of Mankind when the previous human empire had fallen leading to a several millennia long event referred to as "Old Night". Within this time, human progress came to a shuddering halt, as their artificial intelligences and machines had rebelled against them, calling themselves as the Men of Iron. Though humanity won the war, it came at a grave cost. So, the Emperor revealed himself, and begun the Great Crusade to reclaim the stars.

*mg mg* Now, the theme of the setting is "grimdark". Why you may ask? It is because the Imperium is nearly falling apart - not entirely to be utterly overwhelmed - but falling apart to the point where all focus is on trying to keep it together as it gets relentlessly battered from the outside and inside. One of the most prevalent examples is the near ceasing of both social and technological progress. You see, 10000 years ago, the Imperium had a massive civil war where half of the Emperor's sons (known as Primarchs - genetically engineered demigods handcrafted by the Emperor) had turned against their father in a war known as the Horus Heresy. *mg mg*
