The thing is Japan became the empire of cool and faced globalization right when it was entering into a new phase of cultural isolation (late 90s, early 2000s). Through all Japanese history, nips have gone through phases of cultural isolation and strong fascination with the overseas. One of the consequences of the lost decade was a massive ennui and coping with right-wing nationalism, idolshit and nostalgia toward a past that never existed. As usual baka gaijins meddled and Japan's answer was to culturally closed the nation and basically asked the rest of the world to left them alone with their shaved idols and fax machines. Porn is the most blatant way to express society's repress desires and society wanted wannabe idols being raped by middle-aged men, and sometimes dogs. Apparently things are starting to change with Reiwa. Maybe it's the Covid or the frustrated Olympic games but Japan is starting to have interest in the overseas again.
