Incorrect claims were rather common in WW2 to be fair, almost all sides inflated their kills in air fights, Germany claimed Ark Royal sunk two times before they finally got her, the Americans claimed Haruna, the Japanese claimed multiple carriers, German propaganda claimed that Bisko took multiple destroyers down with her, and so on.
