Just finished my first VN, it tooks quite some time to get familiar with the grammar, it was a giant hurdle for me.

I kinda want to read a manga now for a change, but manga are easier grammar wise am I right?
I'm afraid my grammar skills will degrade if I read manga for too long.

Is that a reasonable fear or is that bullshit?

Are there seriously no fucking rules as to how you have to use kanji?
Especially names baffle me sometimes.

Like that chick is written 雪子 and when written like this, it's usually read ゆきこ.
So far so good, but I've seen names that are read nothing like the kanji used usually do.

Can I just be like yeah that's my cute daughter banana written like this 氷火?

This isn't exclusively the case just for names though, when checking readings for 雪 for example I only find ゆき and セツ, but when I look for words containing said kanji I find 吹雪 or 雪崩 .

Question to those that are already capable of reading somewhat fluently.

At what point did you start to enjoy reading?
How long did it take you to become good enough that you barely had to look things up?

Because reading is like a chore for me, I'm only 1 year in though.
