Wow, this ended up being really embarrassing in more ways than one. How did my life come to this? Anyways, it will be a month since the first Mori concert in half a day. Here’s to that. I wanted to time it but whatever. I'll go take my meds (and by that I mean I will destroy my liver with a copious amount of alcohol).

As a young shounen protagonist, Mori powers through life with the might of her guts. She is not the sharpest tool in the shed, she has dreams to achieve and she is willing to work hard to that end. As is the norm for such characters, many of her obstacles are self-imposed, either by her not thinking things through properly before acting or by her sheer stubbornness. Sometimes it’s painful to watch her trying to grind through a wall when there is a perfectly accessible open door right next to her, but I can’t help but admire the attitude. She stumbles from crisis to crisis and no matter how battered by life she gets, no matter how much it hurts, she picks herself up and continues on. She moves forward and grows through her experiences.

But she is afraid. Afraid of admitting that she may encounter a wall she can’t grind through. Afraid of growing up and entering the adult world where some of the dreams she had will turn into bygone regrets. Things that were not meant to be. Yet she takes a step after step. Because every boy must become a man who can stand on his own and do what really matters when it counts.

As a reluctant cool type idol, Mori joined the agency not because she wanted to be an idol, but because she wanted her music to be heard. She comes from a culture where people similar to idols have far from stellar reputation and her personality is not the greatest match for the role. By doing this job, interacting with her new friends and seeing her voice being heard, she comes to understand and appreciate it more, thinking that it’s not so bad being an idol after all. That there is far more to idols than she thought. She continues to work on her music and slowly but surely becomes more idol like.

But she is afraid. Afraid of the mask she puts on when she comes onto the stage. Afraid that the mask is the only thing people would come to see and care about. Afraid that people will completely misinterpret the person behind the mask. Afraid that she will be labeled fake and a sellout, not only by other people but by herself. Yet she takes a step after step. Because that’s what it takes to shine like a star.

Like a magical girl, on a whim she signed a contract and received powers she didn’t and still doesn’t fully comprehend in order to have her nigh impossible wish granted. She did not expect to hold the burden she received on her shoulders and she didn’t understand the price she would have to pay. One could say that it’s her own fault for not doing her research, but this is how the story goes. Despite the hardships, she wields her power to make people happy. Although she isn’t the best at utilizing it at the moment, she is learning.

But she is afraid. Afraid of the dark sides of humanity she encounters when wielding the power. Afraid of temptation to use it for reasons she finds detestable. Afraid of her daily life being fully replaced by endless battles. Afraid of her former life’s thoughts, beliefs and convictions – her very soul – being slowly consumed. Yet she takes a step after step. Because that’s how she saves some of her fans’ worlds.

I am afraid to express these feelings because it’s turbocringe and the realization that I am this far gone and high on copium is filling me with long suppressed dread. Yet I take a step and say this one thing. Mori Calliope is a Hero.
