When the head of the Hakurei Shrine Maiden began to ache as never before, she knew the time would soon come. As no shrine maiden may die without a visit from the deity she serves, she started to make preparations for her last banquet – her last cherry blossom viewing.
As her closest friends were making merry, she lay down on the grass and closed her eyes, and life seemed to depart from her.
In spirit, she rose from her body. Her mind's eye fixed upon a trio of figures approaching the shrine grounds.
"Who goes there?" she called out. "Is it You, Hakurei?"
But replying was a sweet, familiar voice: "Yes, Messenger of Hakurei. But you know us by different names."
And the sun went out; and in the darkness stood the three divinities of Moriya: Sanae Kochiya, Kanako Yasaka and Suwako Moriya.
"I'm sorry that you had to suffer, but you refused to see."
Then they went, and the sun burst once more into a great and gentle light, and Reimu murmured,
"Thank you Moriya, for this gift."
Not long afterwards she died. Marisa, who had overheard Reimu's final words quieted the mourning crowd and wiped her eyes:
"If there be any here who followed the Hakurei faith, let them grieve, for Reimu is dead;
but if there be any here who followed the true Moriya faith, then let them rejoice, for Reimu is surely alive."
And everyone made offerings of plum and rice wine at the Moriya branch shrine.
