Funny coincidence, that I watched two movies in sequence with female characters with a bad left arm. First one was Banka (Northern Elegy) directed by Heinosuke Gosho from 1957. I watched just to see Mieko Takamine and while it was interesting I don't have much desire to talk about. The other movie is Fusen (The Balloon) directed by Yuzo Kawashima with script by the always interesting Shohei Imamura from 1956. Both are starred by Masayuki Mori.
Despite the woman with the bad arm being the protagonist on the first movie, her bad arm didn't had much relevance to the plot. On the second movie despite not being the protagonist the bad arm is of much move relevance because it's an integral part of that character. It's not consequence of an unseen unexplained accident, it's consequence of a childhood disease that also left her a bit dumb. She is at the core of the drama and the movie ends with her father succeeding in putting her towards a happier life than what they were living at the beginning.
Good stuff.
