/jp/ doesn't know anything about the military. You are asking people who will automatically say they look good, but have never seen a good army. Compared to Western militaries, and the Chinese or the Russians, they are piss-poor. Their record of success in modern combat is disappointing and they are still limited in size and mission by the constitution that the United States put in place after the war. Their training is lackluster (why produce soldiers when you are never going to war?) and produces inferior troops. Their "army" is exactly what is sounds like, it is a self-defense force that is only capable of maintaining order in the mainland, not protecting it against outside threats. They know that the US is bound by treaty to come to their defense with their powerful Navy and Marines and do all the fighting for them if they were ever to go to war. What equipment they DO have is good, but it is mostly bought from foreign powers.

So they are nice. For show.
