I think it is exactly because their experiences are so similar that they work so well. I mean they definitely have the star-crossed lovers motif going on but what makes their relationship work is exactly that groundedness in their real experiences, that neither of them could find a person besides the other who could understand their feelings and experiences like the two of them could each other.

Like it's less about their story being an archetypical boy meets girl and more about two people from very bizarre circumstances coming to understand each other.
