Plenty of words used to have kana like that because kana had never been updated according to pronunciation changes. When they modernized it in 1946 so all words were spelled phonetically, they decided to keep the particles in their old kana forms.

So は へ を are still pronounced わ え お when they are particles.

This is probably less confusing to read than if they were spelled phonetically too

maybe it's not piss easy like it is for natives and people who have been studying for over 5 months but even like 1 week into reading I don't think parsing particles from a sentence comes close to being the most challenging thing about the language

it's a nonexistent situation that you run into a bunch of hiragana words and particles like that where it actually gets confusing
