You don't necessarily have to agree with it. The great thing about writing is that, if you, as a writer, feel that advice like this doesn't work for your story then that's fine. You can go in a different direction. If you can come up with something that does the opposite of this kind of advice but works for your story, go for it.

At the end of the day, writing is all about cutting out all the shitty and cliched parts to make something that works. If something doesn't work, get rid of it. Perfecting the overall story is what matters most.
