“Point taken,” she says coming into the room, “but that seat is normally saved for my little sister. Afraid she won’t be joining us tonight.” She sounds depressed. This is not the reaction I was expecting, nor was it something I had hoped for.

“Okuu,” she turns to my latest companion, “Will Orin be joining us? …I see. Make sure she at least washes up before we eat.”

“Talking to yourself again?” Satori’s one-sided conversations amuse me; I wonder how she’ll respond when I put an emphasis on the subject…

“I would like to ask that you please don’t pose a question you already know the answer to.”

She articulates calmly, but I seem to have struck a nerve. We youkai often have long and difficult pasts, and perhaps I brought up a distasteful memory. Or perhaps she’s just in a bad mood. The only question remaining is whether or not I should continue down this path…

“Please don’t,” she says forcefully, without raising her voice, “I’ve been nothing but kind to you.”

“You want appreciation?”

“I want to have a normal dinner with my sister, but it seems I’m asking for too much.”

She takes a seat with her head in her hands.

The sister can come too.
