Ganbaru (頑張る lit., stand firm?), also romanized as gambaru, is a ubiquitous Japanese word which roughly means to slog on tenaciously through tough times.

Ganbaru can be attributed to Japanese rice growing, geographical conditions, and and equal opportunities and raising one's social class. Rice growing came from China in the Jomon period. Rice growing requires periods of intense labor in certain seasons, especially during rice planting and harvest time. This meant working for short periods of time with all of one's strength. Japan's climate has high temperatures and humidity. There are many disasters like floods and earthquakes. It is very mountainous. These conditions never gave the japanese a sense of calm and leisure. This made japan restless and diligent. Opportunities for raising social class incentivized ganbaru. After the meiji restoration, class structure and education systems were reformed. the edo class system (samurai farmers artisans and merchants) was abolished, and the gakusei proclamation (1872) roughly 80% of children had the opportunity to go to school. In 1947, compulsory education edicts were issued, giving virtually all children a chance to go on to a higher level of schooling and attain a better position in society.
