It kind of bothers me that whenever there is some sort of animal-girl with a tail, the tail always seems to come off of the lower-back.

If humanoids actually did have tails, the tail would simply be an extension to the spine, and would instead be protruding slightly below the beginning of the buttocks cleft, which is farther down than is typically portrayed. It would also be hairless and like a reptile tail, not covered in soft fur.

With how tails are currently portrayed, the spine would instead be split into the tail, and then normally continue down as usual.
