I don't know if this happens to everyone who reads Higurashi and Umineko, but I was fooled twice by Ryukishi's "epilogue chapters".
Since the GHD isn't mentioned outside of Tatarigoroshi and Himatsubushi until Tsumihoroboshi's ending, I thought that Himatsubushi was just a continuation of Tatarigoroshi's world and the disaster was really somehow created by Keiichi's curse or some shit like that. The same goes for Umineko. I figured that Ange's story in chapter 4 was just the aftermatch of chapter 3 and just one fragment from many. So when chapter 5 ended with all of her family alive I actually became angry since there was no epilogue with a reunion, even though Ange's story ended just in the previous chapter. It took me until chapter 7 that I realised what we saw from Ange's perspective was the 'actual future' and not just some fragment.
Call me a fool, but Ryukishi always manages to trick me with the same methods.
I'm looking forward to being fooled even worse when phase 2 finally comes out.
