Here are four body mods I took shots of, all with the lighting coming from the right. In the first, default body, you can see a very clear line that defines the transition to full lighting and full shadow. From left to right, I tried to show examples of progressively smoother shaded body mods. You can see multiple tones of color in the transition from light to shadow in those. I hope the illustration makes it understandable, because I can't do that much a better job of explaining it than this. The little color boxes I made are probably what the shader bitmap files look like.

As for hi-lighting, you see that pure white streak on the default left-most body mod? That's the hilighting. That can also be modified to look a lot smoother and blend in with the bodies color tone much more effectively, but instead it is done in a text file.
