Hm, I've thought some about the presentation of this media format and ultimately the composition of the photo lends to that attachment I think. Gravure to me shows the feminine form and energy as beautiful, and the sexual aspect is not explicit, or left to the viewer to interpret. I have seen some knockout stunning photos of idols where it all comes together in a awesome way, background, angle, color palette, idol. Western media in that regard is just, gross. No thought, no nothing, just a depiction of sexuality that really doesn't look good, The closest comparison here in America could be cosplay photography. Maybe that's a good thing in the end, keeps the artform distinct.
