Yeah, games aimed at children are actually pretty hard to read. If they really meant that you shouldn't consume Japanese at all, they were wrong.

You just want to start with something that has full furigana or that makes it incredibly easy to copy digital text into dictionaries. You can move on to whatever you want to play from there once you have some confidence.
