Gave it a shot and rewrote chapter 1 of All's Fair in Love and War. With the knowledge of what happens later on in the story, I trimmed off unnecessary bits and had it begin later in the plot, ending up with under a tenth of the original chapter's size. I want to believe this makes for a better first chapter by not making it feel a chore to read and leaves some details incomplete so that it easily leads to the subsequent chapters.
