I think its 50% this, and 50% the younger generation fearing being, well, genuine. Everyone I know who is 25 and younger is so coated in irony they themselves don't know where it begins and ends, and often it seems to be done as a shield since so many of them are fearful of liking/doing something out of genuine interest because they don't want to be judged for it, but they can skirt that if they just say "I only like anime /ironically/!"
While the golden era of 1997-2007 is long gone, I'm still glad I got to participate in it with you guys.
