...This isn't surprising. It says a lot about the reasoning (or lack of) and constituency of the opposition when all they can do is attempt to derail the discussion with ad hominem and "burn the heretic!" style verbiage. Are we in some sort of pseudo-Middle-Age where Priest Moogy proclaimed "thou shalt not commit machine translation"? It's a totally unscientific and ultimately destructive way of thought, not unlike a religion. Thanks for making me feel like Galileo!

I don't need to. This is a high-level discussion. The specifics of a particular language are implementation details that aren't necessary for such.

The translator sits in the middle of an input and output stream. Input isn't the bottleneck, output is. I don't know anyone who can type faster than they can read. I'm thinking of something like the autocompletion that's already in a lot of other applications: move into the record and a candidate translation is shown, along with several other choices below. You can either choose one of the entire translations, or start typing and it'll suggest other choices that are a closer match. Once you've selected a choice it updates information (which may be context-dependent) that promotes it in the list, so it appears first the next time you encounter something the same or similar.
>there will be lines that you will actually need knowledge of Japanese to translate properly
If you don't like any of the suggestions then you can go ahead and write your full sentence manually. The system should then store that too as one of the choices, and ideally update the backend with a new language pair to learn from.
