Best way to build vocab is to see certain words often and in context.

You may find this miserable, but Pokemon Red/Green is a good way to get used to things. Don't expect it to be easy (kana-only is a bitch at the beginner level).

"Learn" 20 words a day, and no more. Mine the shit you find that's common at first - mostly verbs since you NEED to know things like たたかう、かう、うる、もどる、にげる、つかう、なる、はしる、あるく、する、たおれる、さがる、あずける、あがる、てにいれる、もらう、ひろう、おす、やめる、まける、かつ、and lots of する verbs like かいふく、きどう、かくとく、and so forth. The kicker? LEARN THE KANJI FORM and drill those even if you aren't seeing them in the damn game. This will help solidify it in your mind since now you will imagine 戦う when you see たたかう, or 使う when you see つかう.

Play ポケットモンスター赤・緑

Read out loud the scrolling battle text when it tells you "26 経験値を貰った!" and "賞金として1100円手に入れた!"

by the time you get to the end of the game you'll not only be sick of reading this shit, but you'll also be excellent at it.

I found that the easiest way to memorize the kana was just to play pic related for a while and mine vocab simultaneously (kanji versions tho)

Pretty sure I had all the kana down solid upon reaching the 2nd Gym.

Hi /jp/, I have a bit of a problem. My GF has taken an interest in learning Japanese and I have no real interest in it... Except now I do, by accident. See, she's been trying to memorize all the Katakana/Hiragana with phone apps and flash cards and I jokingly started playing Pokemon Green in its native Japanese to see if it's a more effective means of learning how to read it.

10 hours of game time and 3 gyms later, I can read it with 99% accuracy (albeit kind of slowly) and now I'm frustrated because I want to know more. GF is still stumbling through Katakana and has Hiragana somewhat down after a week of apps and flash cards. I didn't mean to take interest in this, but now I actually want to learn and understand just what the fuck I'm reading, grammar, and other things that will help me to better enjoy the game while learning and getting faster at reading Japanese.

So where exactly do I start? I can obviously enjoy the game as it is since Pokemon is pretty simple, but it's been nice and refreshing re-learning all the original 151 pokes and all the things with their new names (never looking ahead or referencing internet sources for location/move/poke names), and it's just frustrating not knowing what words/patterns/grammar stuff to look for to start "getting" things.

tl;dr Pokemon Green taught me how to read basic hiragana/katakana, and now I want to learn more but don't know where to start.
