The only programmer in VNs I've seen adhere to something that resembles standards is whoever made the TENCO System, since the requirements were sometimes more flexible than standard ADV and I could run ES in my old toaster PC without much memory leaks. (like August's Daitoshokan which consumed a shit ton of VMem on its moving bgk scenes and filter effects, etc.)
