Hey /jp/,

a few weeks ago I thought about picking up writing as a hobby. For the longest time I've had this idea simmering in my head and a few weeks ago I decided to flesh it out a little bit. I'm not aiming to write the greatest novel of mankind or anything like that, because I doubt I have the skill for that. I'm simply aiming to write something fun and enjoyable.

So I've been working on a few things. I've written a timeline of the events that would transpire, started reading up on writing techniques and the common errors that people having a first go at writing make to avoid those pitfalls, and I've begun work on fleshing out the characters a little.

This is where my question for you starts really. I have my own ideas on what makes a memorable character in a book, movie or say something like a light novel or visual novel. But I'd love to hear your opinions on what traits made a character memorable for you. I'm just interested in your opinion.

For example, from visual novels, I personally find Kotomine Kirei a very memorable character because of his twisted ideals and his role in Heavens Feel. Kyon from the Haruhi light novels leaves a good impression as well as he's dragged into all sorts of mayhem against his will, and narrates the story in a slightly cynical tone. These are just the first two that came to mind, but there's probably a lot more and better examples.

Maybe there was a character that you found incredibly endearing, or unbelievably manly. Perhaps a tragic villain, or an apparently useless side-character that for some reason you found fascinating.
