Geisha are not prostitutes; they are entertainers and masters of traditional dance, song, poetry, art, and witty conversation. Geisha translates to master of art. In Kyoto, where geisha are most popular and rigidly traditional, they are called geiko, or, child of the arts. Apprentices are referred to as maiko.
